Chapter I: The Joy and Betrayal of Mata Nui Once upon a time, the world was a paradise - its happiness was overseen by Mata Nui. Mata Nui, enraptured by the beauty of the world, decided to traverse it far and wide. During his travels, he met the only people living on earth at the time - the Tohunga people. Mata Nui took care of the people and the animals. However, Mata Nui did not know that he had a brother named Makuta. Makuta envied Mata Nui and believed that the world should belong to him and him only. Thus began the great battle between the two spirits. Mata Nui fought Makuta for many years. Mata Nui was strong and the scales of victory began to tip against Makuta. Makuta summoned dangerous monsters to help him defeat Mata Nui. However, he failed to take his life. He cast a spell that caused Mata Nui to fall into a deep, eternal sleep. Makuta rejoiced - now the world belonged only to him! On earth, however, fear, sadness and destruction reigned.... However, all was not lost because the six sages called Turaga knew of one last chance. In the time before time, Io, the Great Creator, put six great heroes, who would maintain the balance of the elements, to guard the world, heroes ruling over storms, rains, lightning and thunder, earthquakes and winds. And the Great Creator named these heroes Toa. |
